Hon.Minister of Agriculture and Animal Resources, Dr Gerardine Mukeshimana, has called on Rwandan farmers to embrace climate resilient technologies in a bid to fight effects of climate change.
“Our farmers need to know how to use agricultural technologies to cope with climate change,” she said.
Minister Mukeshimana made the statement on June 23, 2017 while opening the 12th Kigali National Agriculture show that is taking place from June 22 to 27, 2017 at Mulindi showground located in Gasabo District, City of Kigali.
The weeklong event, themed: “Adopt climate resilient technologies to improve farmer livelihoods,” focuses on showcasing various agricultural technologies meant to fight effects of climate change.
The Minister said that the government has initiated small scale irrigation scheme so that the farmers can be able to irrigate their farmlands even during dry seasons. The government subsidizes the small scale irrigation up to 50%; thus enabling the farmers to pay only half of the cost of the irrigation equipment.
Apart from the small scale irrigation scheme, the minister added, the government is also partnering with agro-insurance companies to promote agro-insurance services across the country. In the next fiscal year 2017/18, the government has allocated Frw 200 million to support farmers who seek agro-insurance.
Farmers are also being supported with technologies to store fodder to feed their cattle during dry season, the minister added.
The 12th agrshow features a wide range of innovations in the agriculture sector such as solar energy-powered irrigation system, mechanization, Information and communications technologies (ICTs) in agriculture, agro- processing and modern livestock among others.
The exhibition has attracted individual farmers, farmer organisations, financial service providers, insurances, Agricultural products and equipment companies, international exhibitors and other local agencies.
Different agricultural products on the showground bear testimony to the big efforts made over the years to transform the sector. For instance, a bunch of a banana can today weigh over 140 kg simply due to improved farming practices.
Farmers and private sector are using the forum to learn from each other, find new products, services and partnerships to cope with climate change effects.
The Kigali National Agrishow is yearly event organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources (MINAGRI) to exhibit innovations and best practices in agriculture sector in Rwanda. It is ideal platform that brings exhibitors and visitors together for exchange of information, experience, and getting investment opportunities.
Farmers, financial institutions, private companies, and NGOs among others will exhibit different agricultural products and technologies. The 12th Kigali national agrishow has attracted more than 150 exhibitors, compared to 115 exhibitors last year.
