Rwandan farmers are advised on handling and storing their crops properly after harvest in order to improve the quality of their produce and attract good market.
The Minister of Agriculture and Animal Resources, Dr Gerardine Mukeshimana, says the best practices in handling and storing grain yields will enable the farmers to contain Aflatoxins; which are harmful toxins produced by certain fungi found on agricultural crops such as maize, peanuts, cottonseed, and tree nuts.
“We urge you to enhance your post-harvest management practices for maize produce particularly in a bid to contain aflatoxins,” Minister Mukeshimana told the farmers in Musanze District.
The Minister was speaking at the launch of the “Governance We Want Programme” in Northern Province. The programme is spearheaded by Rwanda Governance Board and implemented together with other stakeholders in a bid to take services closer to citizens.
During the event, local farmers exhibited different technologies used to ensure proper handling and storing of agricultural produce. For instance, they showcased ‘Zero Energy Cooling Chamber’ technology that is used to store fresh vegetables and fruits for up to 14 days.
The farmers were also sensitized on the new law on access to information. In this regard, the minister urged local leaders to provide farmers with all practical information that is likely to enable them make informed decisions and improve their farming activities.
“Farmers need huge information on climate change, pest and disease control, post-harvest management, access to good market, among others, so they can improve their activities. We wish no farmer should lack necessary information while there are leaders closer to them,” the minister said.
The farmers were also provided with agricultural extension materials meant to provide them with knowledge on post-harvest management best practices.
As some of the farmers are preparing for harvesting their crops grown during farming season 2019A across the country, they are being mobilized to get ready ahead of time by constructing hangars and getting other facilities that will help them to properly handle and store their produce. This is in line with the government’s commitment to ensure post-harvest losses are reduced further so farmers can reap more from their efforts.
