On March 04, 2017, Jersey’s Chief Minister Ian Gorst, accompanied by Minister of Agriculture and Animal Resources Dr Gerardine Mukeshimana and other local government officials, visited some of the beneficiaries of Girinka Programme in Rwamagana District who have got cows from Jersey Island.
The beneficiaries testified that the jersey cows they got through the Girinka programme have improved their lives significantly by getting milk for home consumption & selling milk surpluses to generate income.
After visiting the beneficiaries, the Jersey’s Chief Minister commended the Girinka programme for the contribution it has been playing in improving lives of the beneficiaries; noting that it was a delight to see the Girinka results.
“It was a delight to see results of the ongoing work of Jersey Overseas Aid, Send a Cow and Rwanda Ministry of Agriculture to transform the Rwandan dairy industry. I met (Jacqueline) Munganyinka, who says she has improved her family's nutrition & generated income by selling surplus milk. She is also able to pay school fees for her children and connect her house to electricity - thanks to the Jersey cow,” Chief Minister Gorst wrote on his Facebook page after visiting the beneficiaries.
The beneficiaries also said that they’ve been able to increase their farm productivity thanks to manure they get from the cows.
Initiated in 2006, Girinka programme has been playing a great role in alleviating poverty, improving nutrition while increasing income for poor families in rural Rwanda. As of 2016 figures, more than 246,000 cows have been distributed to vulnerable families; and impacts are huge. To speed up the programme, a beneficiary is obliged to give the first born female calf to another selected beneficiary in the community, often a neighbour.
