The Minister of Agriculture and Animal Resources, Dr Gerardine Mukeshimana, has commended the Upgraded Seasonal Agriculture Survey (SAS) designed to provide data for all three agricultural seasons (A, B and C) by the National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda (NISR).
The upgraded seasonal agriculture survey, operational since 2017, is based on the methodology that contributes to improving the current Seasonal Agriculture Survey in order to provide both National and District estimates. Another focus of the upgrade is providing a set of variables that are agriculture, socio-economic, environmental, and food security which are household based.
“This upgraded seasonal agricultural survey is very important for us because it provides us with accurate and timely information up to district level; thus enabling us to make informed decisions,” Minister Mukeshimana told members of the press.
The Minister made the statement while visiting NISR on September 26, 2017. The visit was meant to get first-hand information on how the upgraded seasonal agricultural survey works. The field visit was also attended by the Ambassador of European Union Delegation to Rwanda, Michael Ryan.
The EU Delegation to Rwanda has been supporting the National Institute of Statistics in Rwanda (NISR) to upgrade the Seasonal Agriculture Survey. The support is made of technical assistance to accompanying NISR in the agriculture survey process, equipment and software.
And using the cutting-edge technology makes it easy to get the accurate data, and produce reliable data, according to Yusuf Murangwa, the NISR Director General.
“We used to use paper questionnaire but we're now using tablets and we can now track what our enumerators are doing on field,” Murangwa said, adding that the task that used to last for five months can now be achieved in only one month.
