The minister made the announcement on January 24, 2018 during a press conference that was meant to provide journalists with updates on the current status of the agricultural harvest in the country and the agriculture sector in general. The press conference was also attended by Minister of Local Government, Francis Kaboneka.
“We expect good yields from this season 2018A; which ensures that our population will get enough food and some surplus for sale,” Minister Mukeshimana told the journalists, adding that the ministry is supporting farmers and cooperatives on improved post-harvest operations to reduce post-harvest losses and ensure quality.
Particularly, the ministry’s staff and field agronomists are conducting training and coaching on post-harvest operations; encouraging farmers to use the existing facilities (drying grounds, dryers, warehouse); encouraging farmers to use temporary sheds made using sheetings where permanent structure are not available or insufficient; sensitizing and training farmer's cooperatives on good management of existing post-harvest infrastructures.
Farmers are also being encouraged to store their produce not only for food security purpose, but also to sell the surplus when prices get better, the minister added. There are currently storage facilities (both public and private ones) with installed capacity of 289,245 MT.
The ministry is promoting structured trade of produce so that farmers benefit from better prices. This season, the agreed minimum farm gate price is 210Frw/1kg for maize and 280Frw/1kg for beans.
In addition, Minister Mukeshimana noted that the ministry is at the same time mobilizing the farmers to get prepared for the next planting season on time to ensure increased productivity.
