Rwandan and foreign investors who ventured in poultry industry in Rwanda have reasons to smile thanks to huge returns from this industry which is not yet well exploited.
Jean Baptiste Musabyimana, General Manager of Agri-Business solutions (ABUSOL Ltd), is one of the Rwandan investors based in Mayange Sector of Bugesera District have invested their money into poultry and they are find the industry very profitable.
The owner of the 14-hectare poultry farm says the interest in venturing into poultry business came from the obvious realization that Rwanda lacks a well-developed poultry industry; thus turning into opportunities for private investors.
Musabyimana, who uses modern technologies in rising chickens, owns a 20,000-poultry farm producing 18000 eggs per day and says that the internal market is still very huge.
“Our intention is to bring high quality eggs to the market, but also assist farmers around here to lift the poultry business to a level of a successful performing industry,” Musabyimana says, adding that they also produce quality animal feeds and intend to train local farmers on modern poultry farming.
Singaporean Shumei Lam, the Managing Director and owner Poultry East Africa Limited (PEAL) based in Bugesera, also says her company has been producing 5500 chickens per week since 2013 and selling 1Tone of broilers in different hotels in Rwanda. She also confirms that returns are huge and they can’t satisfy the available market.
These investors are doing what the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources (MINAGRI) has been striving for. The ministry has been encouraging private sector operators to take advantages of available opportunities in the agriculture sector not only to boost agricultural production, but also diversify agricultural products.
When Minister of Agriculture and Animal Resources Dr Gerardine Mukeshimana was visiting these poultry farmers on January 11, 2017, she commended their work and encouraged them to work closely with government institutions in a bid to provide local poultry farmers with skills in poultry farming.
Poultry industry in Rwanda is currently characterized by the coexistence of 2 systems: rudimentary village poultry and industrial poultry at its infancy, the 2 systems facing scarcity of inputs to fully exploit their potential.
Rwanda still import eggs and other poultry products which offers great investment opportunities for the private sector.
