Minister of Agriculture and Animal Resources, Dr. Gerardine Mukeshimana, has announced that the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources (MINAGRI) has lifted the animal quarantine that was since May 2017 imposed in Gatsibo, Kayonza and Nyagatare districts of Eastern Province due to foot and mouth disease.
The minister made the announcement on January 22, 2018 during a meeting with farmers in Gatsibo district. The meeting, also attended by the governor of the Eastern Province, Fred Mufuluke, Mayors of Gatsibo, Kayonza and Nyagatare Districts, was meant to discuss about livestock transformation in the province in general, and the enforcement of measures put in place to prevent food and mouth diseases in particular.
The animal quarantined was removed following a thorough surveillance that indicated that there had been no new cases of foot and mouth disease in the districts since the end of last year, the minister added.
“Since December 21, 2017 the ministry and other involved parties haven’t noticed any case of foot and mouth disease which proves the area has now recovered from the disease” Minister Mukeshimana told dairy farmers in Gatsibo District.
The minister also warned the farmers to be vigilant of the disease and follow the advice of local veterinaries to avoid another occurrence of diseases which cause heavy losses to the farmers.
The ministry has put check points at borders and use vaccination as one of the country’s preventive measures to curb the disease.
