Farmers growing crops in Rugende marshland, stretching from Kicukiro to Gasabo and Rwamagana Districts, have started planting season 2018B by sowing seeds of maize and using both organic & inorganic fertilizers to ensure increased agricultural productivity.
The planting season 2018B, launched at Rugende site, Gako Cell, Masaka sector of Kicukiro District, was officiated on February 22, 2018 by the Minister of State for agriculture, Fulgence Nsengiyumva, together with officials from Kicukiro, Gasabo and Rwamagana Districts.
Rugende marshland, recently developed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources (MINAGRI) through Rural Sector Support Programme (RSSP) – which focuses on marshland development in the country, extends on 400 ha. It will be used for multiplication of maize seeds, rice farming and fodder growing.
Minister of State Nsengiyumva called upon farmers and local agronomists to speed up sowing exercise in order to accomplish planting by March 15, 2018 to ensure that all crops get necessary rainwater to mature. Meteorological information says farmers from different parts of the country will get enough rain from the end of February till the end of May.
Season launch marks the beginning of the season, in which the government gives it much consideration; during such event the government through the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources provides directions, expectations, mobilize and ensure that farmers understand some of the key government program, especially in agriculture.
