PM NGIRENTE CALLS ON AFRICAN LEADERS TO WORK TOGETHER TO ENSURE FOOD SECURITY
Prime Minister Edouard Ngirente has called on African leaders to work together in a bid to be able to feed the population of the African continent.
The Prime Minister made the call on August 06, 2019 in Kigali while closing the Africa Food Security Leadership Dialogue.
“We have all of us an assignment: let's work together, tell and show the rest of the world that we are able to feed our people, and we can achieve that for sure,” the premier told participants to the two-day event.
Prime Minister Ngirente urged African countries to deal with undernutrition since over 20% of the population in Africa, which means 256 million people are facing malnutrition and that 30% of the young children on the continent, are stunted.
He further revealed that all this is happening while Africa has a quarter of the world’s arable land but produces only 10% of global agricultural output.
“As we depart from this place, let us all go with one mind that the best way to ensure food security in a changing climate is to work together and move from theories to action,” he said.
The Prime Minister also reiterated the commitment of the Government of Rwanda to strengthen partnership with other African countries, development partners and other key stakeholders to implement continental, regional as well as national priorities to ensure sustainable food security.
Africa Food Security Dialogue brought together Heads of States, Ministers of agriculture and finance, heads of international institutions and Regional economic commissions, Nobel laureates, and eminent scientists to catalyze actions and financing to help address Africa’s worsening food security crisis under climate change.
