Men and women of Rwanda Defence Forces (RDF) in collaboration with staff of the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources (MINAGRI) are supporting Rwandan farmers in different farming activities across the country during this year’s RDF Citizen Outreach Programme; formerly known as RDF Army Week.
This campaign, which is running from April 20 to July 04, 2018, put farming activities on top of the agenda in all districts with the core purpose of liberating Rwandans from poverty and food insecurity which, for one way or another, can impact the economy of the country.
The main objective of this agriculture campaign is: “to increase the agricultural production and support farmers as part of continuous drive to sustain the country’s development effort.”
This outreach is focusing on land preparation for next season, planting of vegetables, cassava cuttings, Irish potato, banana rehabilitation, small scale irrigation & mechanization, composting & weeding and activities of optimizing productivity of livestock namely; cultivation of forage, livestock farms rehabilitation & paddocking, harvesting hay and construction of hangar to store the harvested hay, rehabilitation of valley dams among others.
On April 23, 2018, MINAGRI and RDF joined residents of Kamonyi district to plant vegetables, maize and onions which will address the current shortage of fresh food in Kigali and countryside markets.
Addressing the citizens, the Minister of Agriculture and Animal Resources, Dr. Gerardine Mukeshimana urged them to work hard and maintain discipline in their activities if they want to achieve development. She also assured them that the Government is ready to provide them with necessary support in order to achieve progress.
While launching the campaign in western Province on April 20, 2018 where RDF and MINAGRI joined Nyabihu residents planting irish potatoes on 40 hectares of land, Minister of Defence, General James Kabarebe, told the residents that the army wants to support Rwandans to achieve their food security.
The agriculture sector was included in the campaign for the first time last year in 2017 and brings together RDF soldiers and the local community- Farmers where they collectively work together for the benefit of their respective area/region.
