The Minister of State in charge of agriculture, Fulgence Nsengiyumva, has called on farmers in Ruhango District to apply best farming practices in a bid to increase cassava productivity during this growing season.
The Minister of State made the call on September 21, 2017 while launching the growing season 208A in Kinazi Sector of Ruhango District. The season was launched by planting new cassava variety cuttings that are disease-resistant and high-yielding.
“We urge you (Ruhango farmers) to use best farming practices in order to increase productivity since you’ve got the new cassava variety,” Minister of State Nsengiyumva told the farmers.
The Minister of State added that the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources (MINAGRI) in collaboration with Rwanda Youth in Agribusiness Forum (RYAF) has deployed young agronomy graduates who will assist the farmers in order to increase productivity. The graduates have been deployed there as part of the recently launched internship programme; currently being launched in all districts and across all agricultural value chains to support in increasing productivity.
Nsengiyumva said some farmers still harvest eight tonnes per one hectare while others are able to harvest 30 tonnes per hectare; which calls for more efforts to double production and satisfy processing plants.
The new variety was distributed to seed multipliers over the last seasons and now farmers are being provided with the new cassava variety cuttings. The Minister of State urged district officials to work closely with the multipliers to ensure that a number of farmers gradually access it.
“Multipliers are provided with varieties for multiplication and then return the same amount they received to MINAGRI which later provides them to poor farmers free of charge. The other mechanism is providing the varieties to farmers on credit which they pay after selling their harvest,” he explained.
Cassava will be planted on 1,800 hectares in Kinazi sector alone while in the whole district 7,700 hectares are targeted, according to the district officials.
