The government of Rwanda and South Africa’s Free State Province would soon establish a strong collaboration in agriculture sector, officials from both sides have said.
The collaboration was discussed during a meeting held on November 3, 2017, by Jean Claude Kayisinga, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources, and the delegation from South Africa’s Free State Province that was led by Oupa Khoabane, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development in the province.
According to officials, proposed areas of collaboration include exchange of agriculture and animal resources products, management and diseases control; exchange of expertise, production and exchange of germoplasm, research and development; and agro-processing.
Speaking during the meeting, Permanent Secretary Kayisinga commended the good move; noting that “sharing knowledge is a great thing as Africans we can do to develop our countries together.”
The Permanent Secretary also provided the delegation with an overview of Rwanda’s agriculture sector in general and some of the key home-grown solutions that have been undertaken to achieve the country’s agricultural transformation.
PS Kayisinga for instance told the delegation how many Rwandan families have been able to significantly improve their lives thanks to One Cow Per poor family program, locally known as Girinka program. Since its inception in 2006, more than 300,000 vulnerable families have received cows through Girinka program.
Members of the delegation commended efforts that Rwanda has made in transforming the agriculture sector; and they particularly lauded Girinka program that has been improving lives of many Rwandans.
Both sides are expected to keep working closely in order to elaborate the areas of collaboration between Rwanda and Free State province.
