RWANDA ROLLS OUT A FRUIT TREE PLANTING CAMPAIGN
The Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources (MINAGRI) has launched a countrywide campaign that is meant to boost the plantation of fruit trees across the country.
The campaign was launched on October 31, 2019 during the celebration of the 2019 World Food Day. According to officials, every household should plant at least three fruit trees as part of the ongoing campaign to mobilise Rwandan families to grow nutritious foods. Schools are also urged to embrace this fruit tree planting campaign so that students can get fruits at school.
“I urge all Rwandans to embrace this three fruit tree planting campaign and call upon all partners to support this drive,” said Minister of Agriculture and Animal Resources, Dr Gerardine Mukeshimana. She made the statement while launching the campaign in Rutsiro District.
This drive is in line with the fourth Strategic Plan for the Transformation of Agriculture [2018-2024] (PSTA4) which recognizes the importance of fruits as they play a significant role in food and nutrition security for the urban and rural Rwandan population; hence the need to promote fruit trees for household consumption.
The integration of agroforestry (that includes fruit trees) in crop production can contribute significantly to soil health. PSTA4 recognises the potential of agroforestry to contribute to sustainable land husbandry.
