RWANDA TEA SCOOPS HIGHEST PRICE RECORD AT MOMBASA AUCTION
Rwandan tea from Kitabi Tea Estate has again gained a tremendous price increase on its BP1 grade that was sold at US$ 6.06/kg during sale number 33 at the Mombasa Tea Auction that was held on 13th August 2019, followed by Gisovu Tea factory with its BP1 grade also sold at USD 5.97/Kg. These are the first highest prices realized at the Mombasa tea auction since 1956 when EATTA (East African Tea Trade Association) was established.
The good prices are attributed to the much valued feedback from the buyers of Rwandan tea and continuous engagement with farmers, pluckers and tea makers together with the Rwanda Tea Association (FERWACOTHE) that have always ensured consistent quality that is much sought after by the market.
By the end of financial year 2018/2019, Rwandan tea producers had exported 30.573 MT of which they generated USD $ 83,552,108 from a total area under tea production of 27,112 hectares. By 2024, we expect a total volume of 65,099 Metric Tons of Rwanda Tea to be exported and generate USD $209 million.
Rwanda Tea fraternity would like to recognize tea farmers, the tea factory management teams for following and supporting the Government of Rwanda initiative of focusing on quality, and most importantly the much valued buyers that have continued to show confidence in Rwandan tea. We shall continuously work hand in hand with tea factories to ensure consistency in the quality of made tea.
