Cassava farmers across the country are now upbeat as they get new cassava varieties that are free from viral diseases. Both NASE14 (Namulonge Selection 14) and NAROCASS varieties imported from Uganda are being distributed for multiplication in a bid to get enough cuttings in the new future.
Figures from Rwanda Agriculture Board (RAB) indicate that about 20 million cuttings of the new cassava varieties are expected to be multiplied on 1000ha during season 2017A and 1000ha in 2017B. The new cassava varieties have been proven to be tolerant to Cassava Brown streak disease (CBSD).
While distributing the new varieties in Rwabicuma sector of Nyanza district on December 01, 2016, the Minister of State in charge of agriculture, Fulgence Nsengiyumva urged the farmers to take care of the seeds they got and respect all preventive measures in place to fight against diseases. Nyanza District plans to multiply the new cassava varieties on 100 ha during this season.
The Minister of State in Charge of Agriculture promised Nyanza farmers that the government will do everything possible to make sure that farmers get enough new cassava cuttings in due time.
The farmers hailed the ministry for providing them with the cuttings; given that cassava is widely grown in Southern Province.
