Madhvani Group, which owns Kabuye Sugar Works, says they are committed to boost sugar production that will enable the country to reduce sugar imports.
The Madhvani Group reiterated the commitment on its plans to expand the factory capacity on January 17, 2017, during a meeting held at Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources (MINAGRI) Head Office that brought together the group Board of Directors and Minister of Agriculture and Animal Resources Dr Gerardine Mukeshimana.
According to Farhan Nakhooda, the group’s project Director, there are many ongoing works of increasing the sugar cane plantations surface. Among the main target are the Nyabarongo valley towards Bugesera, The previously flooded Masaka Marshland besides Inyange Industry and Bugesera upland cultivation.
“We have the aim to drain the areas that are vulnerable flood and we will put giant irrigation schemes in Bugesera sugar cane plantation both for increasing the row material for the plant,” he said.
He added that after all those works the Plant capacity will be upgraded to 50 000MT of Sugar per anum, while the Market demand go to a maximum of 80,000 metric tons.
Minister Dr Mukeshimana urged the company to work hard for regional market completion, by reducing the sugar import to a significant ratio of 62, 5%.
Since 1997, the Kabuye sugar factory was bought by the Madhvani Group with the main objective to avail sugar to the Rwandan market.
By the then Memorandum of understanding between the factory and the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources (MINAGRI), the company acquired land around Nyabugogo and Nyabarongo rivers.
In a new MOU signed in 2013, the company has been urged by the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources to involve farmers in a private-Public Partnership model with regards to deliver jobs to many people.
