Government Funded Irrigation enables Kirehe farmers to increase produce

Minister of Agriculture and Animal Resources, Dr Gerardine Mukeshimana, has urged farmers in Kirehe District to take advantages of irrigation facilities and different agricultural programs supported by irrigation schemes to modernize their farming activities.
The minister made the call on January 27, 2017 while interacting with farmers during the monthly community work commonly known as ‘Umuganda’ in Mpanga sector of Kirehe District.
Some farmers of Mpanga sector in Kirehe District have been able to grow different crops such as maize, soybeans and vegetables all year round over the last few years thanks to Government Funded Irrigation facilities. And the farmers say they have been registering an increased produce thanks to the irrigation facilities.
Minister Mukeshimana noted that it’s “always a pleasure,” adding that encouraging agriculture initiatives by these citizens have led to bumper harvest in irrigation schemes and new banana plantations. The Minister also reminded the farmers to start early preparations for season 2017B and selecting.
Kirehe farmers also commended other agriculture initiatives that such as Girinka Programmes that have been changing lives of Rwandans. Constasia Zaninka, is one of the Girinka programme beneficiaries who said her livelihoods have improved tremendously thanks to Girinka and she now share milk with her neighbors.
Minister Mukeshimana also requested Kirehe Farmers to take care of the irrigation facilities so that they can keep growing crops even during dry seasons.
