MINAGRI: 2022 Highlights

As per MINAGRI Annual Report, 2021/2022, the agriculture sector growth is now at 3%. The sector generated USD 640.9 million from exports, contributed 37% of the total National exports and 23% to the National GDP.

Area under irrigation is 68,126 ha, mechanized farm is at 36%, while animal products output is as follows:

Milk production stands at 999,976 MT

Meat production stands at 185,989 MT

Fish production stands at 43,560 MT

Eggs production stands at 8,665 MT

Honey production stands at 6, 135 MT

MINAGRI also hosted a number of high-level events and activities in 2022 such as the 2022 African Green Revolution Forum (AGRF) hosted in Kigali from September 5 to 9, 2022.

It concluded with a sense of optimism and a strong ask for leaders to act decisively and swiftly to implement the ambitions and practical actions discussed during the summit. Bringing together over 2400 delegates in Kigali and over 4000 delegates virtually, the AGRF 2022 meeting highlighted the importance of collaboration in fast-tracking progress and emphasized the need for cooperation and capacity building as a response to the various shocks currently affecting the continent’s food systems.

On Tuesday September 13, 2022, the ministry organised the first Agriculture Sector Working Group meeting of the current Financial Year 2022/23, bringing together stakeholders and development partners in the agriculture sector here in Rwanda. The meeting assessed implementation of the fourth Strategic Plan for Agriculture Transformation (PSTA4).

On Friday September 30, 2022, the Government of Rwanda through the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources (MINAGRI) together with the World Bank Group launched a US$300 million project that seeks to commercialize and de-risk the agriculture sector in Rwanda.

From October 4 to 6, 2022, Rwanda hosted Poultry Africa 2022, a conference and exhibition event about the poultry value chain that attracted more than 120 exhibiting companies from more than 20 countries. Held at the Kigali Convention Center (KCC), the event also welcomed more than 2,000 visitors, decision-makers, and buyers.

On Friday October 28, 2022, Rwanda marked World Food Day 2022, with the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources and major stakeholders in the agriculture sector including representatives of Rome-based agencies of FAO, IFAD, and WFP joining residents in Muhanga District to celebrate the day. The day was observed under the theme: “Leave No One Behind, Better Production, Better Nutrition, a Better Environment and a Better Life”. During the celebrations at Buziranyoni site in Rongi sector, urea fertilizer was applied on maize crops, cows given to vulnerable families, agroforestry tree seedlings planted, and children fed with milk and nutritious food.

Through MINAGRI, government subsidised 100% the DAP and Urea fertilisers which were applied on selected consolidated crop plantations during country-wide special community works launched on November 1st, 2022 to apply the fertilisers on crops while also irrigating areas that faced shortage of rains. Cabinet ministers, provincial governors, mayors, members of security organs, and other senior officials joined farmers in their fields for the activities, which aimed to increase productivity in the current agricultural season 2023A.
