Minimum price of maize fixed at Frw 200 per kilogramme

Stakeholders involved in maize value chain in Rwanda have set the farm gate price of maize at Frw 200 per kilogramme for season 2017A harvest in a bid to improve farmers’ income.
The minimum price was jointly set on January 09, 2017 during a meeting that brought together representatives of maize growers, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and East African Community Affairs (MINEACOM), Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources, and maize buyers.
Though the meeting fixed the minimum price, farmers are free to negotiate suitable prices as long as a Kilogramme of maize doesn’t fetch below Frw 200. The setting of price was necessitated by the desire to curb illegal maize trade and assess the preparedness of the market to absorb the expected maize produce in season 2017A.
Projections indicate that maize production from this season is expected to be around 781,000 tons while 539,000 tons of beans are expected.
Under the Crop Intensification Programme (CIP), the Government aims at increasing agricultural productivity in high-potential food crops and ensuring food security and self-sufficiency.
