Minister of State who is in charge of agriculture, Fulgence Nsengiyumva, has urged rice growers in Nyagatare District to mechanize their farming activities and use quality seeds in a bid to increase agricultural productivity.
The Minister of Sate made the call on June 19, 2017 during the 30th anniversary celebrations of CO-DERVAM, a rice growers’ cooperative of Cyabayaga Marshland, Rukomo Sector, Nyagatare District, in Eastern Province.
The cooperative started operations in 1987. Currently, it has 1,335 farmers who grow rice on 400ha in Cyabayaga Marshland stretching from Rukomo, Mukama, Mimuri and Nyagatare sectors of Nyagatare District. They have already achieved an average productivity of 5tons per hectare.
The Minister of State urged the cooperative members to stay focused and keep working together not only to get to the next level of their progress journey, but also inspire other cooperatives.
“Cooperatives is about working together. You ought to work together to have your cooperative prosper,” Minister of State Nsengiyumva told CO-DERVAM members, adding that cooperatives have great role in fostering the country’s development and prosperity of households.
In collaboration with Rwanda Agriculture Board (RAB), CODERVAM ventures into multiplying quality rice seeds.
The Minister of State also called on the farmers to embrace the ongoing campaign to put an end to all forms of child labor in rice farming.
