NAEB resettles 100 families affected by tea expansion project in Nyaruguru District

The National Agricultural Exports Board (NAEB) has started resettling 234 families that were affected by ongoing Unilever Tea Rwanda Limited expansion project in Munini-Kibeho sites of Nyaruguru District.
Munini-Kibeho tea site is among five zones selected for tea acreage expansion projects following targets set in Economic Development for Poverty Reduction Strategy (EDPRS) II. Since 2013, the National Agricultural Export Development Board (NAEB) has been building new resettlements for 234 families who were living in parts of Munini and Kibeho sectors of Nyaruguru District.
While handing over 100 housing units to some of the affected families in Nyaruguru District on February 07, 2017, Ambassador George William Bill Kayonga, the CEO of NAEB, said that over 4,000 HA of tea will be developed of which 3200 HA will belong to farmers creating over 2,000 jobs and increase tea exports by 15%.
“The support of the farmers has and will continue to be the critical component for the success of the over 30 billion FRW investment,” pointed out Kayonga.
The first phase of that project is completed with new 100 housing units constructed for 100 families resettled from the tea industrial block, where Unilever Company is ready to start its activities of tea plantation expansion and factory very soon. The rest of families to be resettled (134) are expected to receive their houses after six months.
These buildings are modern houses in two designs: Four in One and Two in One designs, whereby houses are annexed which makes them a new village model, commonly known as ‘Imidugudu.’
“These houses have everything I never had a dream of and I think this is the beginning of my future,” said Beatha Mukarurangwa, one of resettled citizens.
Apart from the houses, resettled people will benefit from infrastructures such as roads, electricity, water supply, health & educational facilities and the tea industrial block will provide jobs for them.
In addition, 140 cowsheds were built to accommodate cows that will be given to them through ‘Girinka’ program. The whole resettlement project has so far cost more than one billion and half Rwandan Francs while the cost per one house is 10.8 million Rwandan Francs.
