Rwanda hosted the 6th Eastern Africa Farmers Federation Congress
The Government of Rwanda, through the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources (MINAGRI), hosted the 6th Eastern Africa Farmers Federation (EAFF) Congress and Exhibition under the theme “Towards More Sustainable Food and Farming Systems.” The event took place in Kigali from 30th September to 2nd October 2025.
This year’s edition was particularly significant as it marked 20 years of EAFF’s operations in promoting food security and agricultural development across the region. The congress convened more than 200 delegates, over 20 exhibitors, and high-level stakeholders from Africa and beyond.
The congress addressed a broad range of issues, including the evolving landscape of agriculture and food trade in Africa, climate change and adaptation strategies, and the promotion of agri-food trade. It also explored innovations and technologies that are shaping modern agriculture, while emphasizing the vital role of youth and women in driving agricultural transformation.
Speaking at the official opening of the meeting, Dr. Mark Cyubahiro Bagabe, Rwanda’s Minister of Agriculture and Animal Resources, emphasized that the congress provides a platform to transform principles into action and translate partnerships into measurable results that directly benefit farmers.
“As EAFF celebrates its 20th anniversary, this moment provides an opportunity to look ahead by building inclusive, resilient, and regionally integrated food systems. Such systems will create jobs, empower women and youth, restore landscapes, and open new markets for farmers,” Dr. Bagabe said.
Held every four years, the Eastern Africa Farmers Federation Congress serves as a premier platform for addressing key agricultural challenges. It provides opportunities for dialogue, knowledge exchange, and the showcasing of innovations that shape the future of agriculture.
The Eastern Africa Farmers Federation (EAFF) is a regional, non-political, and non-profit organization that started operations in 2005 to represent the voice of smallholder farmers across Eastern Africa. Operating through national farmer organizations in 10 countries, EAFF champions inclusive policies and programmes that drive sustainable agriculture, food security, and economic empowerment. The federation’s core mandate is to advocate for farmers' interests at regional and continental levels. Through robust member networks, strategic partnerships, and transformative agricultural initiatives, EAFF works to enhance regional integration and improve the livelihoods of farming communities.
